Wool vs Synthetic: Does Rug Material Change How It's Cleaned?
Wool needs a controlled, low moisture approach. Synthetic fibre is more forgiving. Here is what actually changes between the two, and why rugs are cleaned on-site, not sent away.

Short answer: yes, a wool rug can be steam cleaned, but it needs a controlled, low moisture method rather than the standard truck mounted extraction used on tougher synthetic carpet. Overwetting wool risks browning and shrinkage. Synthetic rugs are more forgiving of a standard clean. Every rug we clean is done on-site, not sent away.

Why fibre changes the method
Wool is a natural fibre, and it behaves very differently to synthetic fibre under moisture and heat. Overwetting wool can cause browning, where natural tannins in the fibre discolour, and aggressive extraction can affect the shape and pile of the rug. A synthetic rug is generally more tolerant of a standard clean, since the fibre does not react to moisture the same way.
That does not mean a wool rug cannot be steam cleaned. It means the process is more controlled, lower moisture, and matched to the specific rug rather than a one method fits all approach.
Why rugs are not just treated like carpet
A rug is a standalone item, not fixed to the floor, and often more valuable or harder to replace than the carpet around it. Backing, fringe and construction all vary between rugs in a way fitted carpet does not, which is why rug cleaning is its own service rather than an extension of a whole-room carpet clean.
On-site, always
Every rug we clean is done at your property, on-site. There is no dropping a rug off and waiting for it to come back from an off-site facility, and no risk of it being mixed up with someone else's.
Pet urine in rugs
Pet accidents in a wool rug need a more careful antibacterial enzyme treatment than the same accident on synthetic fibre, since wool holds moisture and odour differently. Never hot water on a pet stain, on any fibre, it sets the mark rather than lifting it.

Got questions? Straight answers below. Or skip ahead:
Yes, but with a controlled, low moisture method matched to wool, not the same truck mounted extraction used on tougher synthetic carpet. Overwetting wool risks browning and shrinkage, so the technique has to change for the fibre.
Are rugs cleaned differently to carpet?
Yes. Rugs are a standalone item, not fixed to the floor, so they are cleaned with methods matched to their specific fibre and construction rather than the standard whole-room approach used on fitted carpet.
Do you take rugs off-site to clean?
No, on-site only. The rug is cleaned in place at your property, so there is no waiting on a rug to come back from an off-site facility.
How do I know if my rug is wool or synthetic?
Check the label or tag if it has one. If not, we can usually tell during the estimate. If you bought the rug from a retailer, they can typically confirm the fibre from the original listing or receipt.
Is pet urine harder to remove from a wool rug than a synthetic one?
Generally yes. Wool is more absorbent and more sensitive to the wrong treatment, so pet urine in a wool rug needs a more careful antibacterial enzyme treatment than the same accident on a synthetic rug.
