Estimate vs Quote: Why CPH Services Gold Coast Never Gives a Fixed Price Over the Phone

An estimate and a quote sound like the same thing. They are not, and the difference is exactly why we never give a fixed number over the phone.

Short answer: a quote is a fixed price given before anyone has seen the job, usually over the phone. An estimate is a considered price given after a technician has actually looked at the carpet, the stains, the pest activity or the property, so it reflects the real job rather than a guess. We only ever give estimates, never phone quotes, because a number given blind is not honest pricing.

What the actual difference is

A quote is a fixed, binding number given sight unseen. An estimate is a professional's informed price given after actually seeing the real conditions, the size of the job, the soiling or the pest activity involved. An estimate may be refined once the full scope is confirmed on site, but it is grounded in what is genuinely there, not a figure picked out of the air to win a booking over the phone.

Why a phone quote usually goes wrong

There are two common outcomes when a company quotes blind. Either they undercut on the phone to win the job, then find extra charges once someone is standing in the room, an extra room here, a stain there. Or they overcut to protect themselves against the unknown, meaning most customers end up paying for a worst case scenario that never actually happens. Both outcomes come from the same root problem, pricing something nobody has actually looked at yet.

How our estimate process actually works

A technician assesses the specific carpet or property in person wherever practical, or asks detailed questions for a straightforward job requested online or by phone. From there, we explain what is actually involved and why, then give an honest number before any work starts, with no surprise add-ons once that number is agreed. The $145 plus GST minimum call-out fee covers that assessment visit itself.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you give an estimate and not a quote?
Because we have not seen the carpet or the property yet. A number given over the phone before anyone has assessed the soiling, the stains or the pest activity is a guess, not a price. An estimate is us telling you honestly what we expect once we understand what we are actually dealing with.
Can I get an estimate without someone visiting my property first?
Yes, for straightforward jobs, through the 60 Second Quick Estimate or over the phone with enough detail. Larger or more complex jobs are more accurately estimated with an in-person look first.
Will the estimate change once the technician arrives?
Only if the job on site is genuinely different from what was described, for example more rooms than mentioned, or a stain that wasn't flagged upfront. Otherwise the estimate given holds.
Does an estimate itself cost anything?
The estimate is part of a standard visit. The $145 plus GST minimum call-out fee covers a technician's time to assess the job in person before pricing it.
